Separating Your Legal Ceremony from Your Wedding Day

Here's something a lot of couples don't realise is an option: according to Bridebook's 2026 UK Wedding Report, around 1 in 8 couples didn't have their legal ceremony on their actual wedding day.

Why couples do this

There are a few common reasons. Some couples have a small, simple legal ceremony at a registry office, sometimes just the two of them or with a couple of witnesses, and then have a larger celebration later, whether that's weeks or months down the line. It can be a way to manage costs, avoid restrictions around certain venues, or simply take the pressure off the "big day" itself.

Even a simple registry office moment is worth capturing, and it can make for a lovely, low-key set of photos that sit alongside your main celebration.
