There was snow on the ground and a proper winter chill in the air, but that only added to the atmosphere of Amy and Matt’s wedding at Donington Park Farmhouse Hotel, a barn venue in Derbyshire. Coverage started with Amy’s preparations there in the morning.

The venue

Donington Park Farmhouse Hotel is a converted barn venue with the kind of exposed beams and rustic finish that suits a winter wedding particularly well — warm lighting against cold weather outside makes for a strong contrast in photographs. It’s a venue that photographs just as well in snow as it does in summer.

Highlights from the day

Matthew arrived in a VW Camper with his best man and ushers, and the ceremony went ahead just before the second national lockdown came into force. Guest numbers were smaller than originally planned because of the restrictions, but it made for an intimate, focused afternoon rather than a diminished one — everyone there was fully present for the day.

Our approach

A smaller winter wedding still deserves full attention, and that’s what we gave it — working quietly through the ceremony and reception, making the most of the barn’s natural light and the snow outside without asking anyone to brave the cold longer than they needed to.
